When and where will the Prius Plug-in be available?
The Prius Plug-in will be available at participating dealers starting March 2012 in 15 launch states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. Availability will open up to all other states in 2013. Visit the Toyota Hawaii site for more info about ordering in the state of Hawaii.
I don't live in one of the launch states. Can I still buy a Prius Plug-in?
Yes. You have two options:
  • 1. You can contact a dealer in one of the 15 launch states and inquire about future dealer stock.
  • 2. You can ask us to remind you when the Plug-in is available in your state at the closest participating dealer (coming 2012).
I want to buy a Plug-in. What should I do?
Now that Online Ordering has ended, we recommend contacting a Prius Plug-in dealer to inquire about future inventory. You can find one using the availability map.
I'm registered for the Prius Plug-in. Am I guaranteed a vehicle?
No. Priority Registration only gave you the chance to order the Plug-in while quantities lasted. In addition, since Online Ordering ended on December 15, 2011, you are no longer able to place an order for the vehicle online.
What are the key advantages of the Prius Plug-in?
The Plug-in is engineered for dedicated electric driving capability that can let you travel up to 62 mph on electric power alone. The Plug-in is rated to drive up to 11 miles [1] while in EV mode [2] [3]. It also features a quick three-hour charge time from a standard 120V AC household outlet [4]. If you run out of electric charge, the vehicle seamlessly shifts into hybrid mode, still giving you great mpg.
How does the Prius Plug-in work?
To charge the Prius Plug-in, you simply plug it into any standard household outlet with a dedicated 15-amp circuit. This produces a full charge in just three hours. If you have installed a dedicated 240V Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) outlet, charging the vehicle only takes 1.5 hours. If you run out of electric charge while driving, don't worry - the vehicle automatically transitions to hybrid mode and runs on the gas engine until you have a chance to recharge.
Should I buy a Prius or the Prius Plug-in?
The Prius Plug-in operates just like the 3rd Generation Prius, but it gives you the added benefit of a dedicated electric driving capability. This is a great option for drivers who take many short trips and have access to outlets for charging. For instance, it's possible to nearly always run in electric mode and never use a single drop of gas. However, if you find yourself regularly taking longer trips and/or have limited access to outlets, then the 3rd Generation Prius may be a better choice.

The Prius Plug-in has no spare tire. What if I get a flat?
Like all other new Toyota vehicles, the Plug-in comes standard with Toyota Care [14], which offers complimentary maintenance and roadside service for two years or 25,000 miles. In addition, the Prius Plug-in will come with an extra year of roadside assistance, for a total of three years from date of purchase. In the event of an emergency where roadside assistance cannot be contacted, a Tire Repair System is standard equipment.

Will the Prius Plug-in qualify for the federal tax incentive?
Yes, individual purchasers of a Prius Plug-in vehicle may be able to take advantage of the Federal Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle tax credit. The Prius Plug-in vehicle tax credit is confirmed to be $2,500.

QUALIFIED PLUG-IN ELECTRIC DRIVE MOTOR VEHICLE TAX CREDIT

To qualify for the potential Plug-in tax credit:

  • 1. The Plug-in vehicle must be new. Used vehicles will not qualify.
  • 2. The Plug-in vehicle must be purchased. Leased vehicles will not allow the lessee to take advantage of the Plug-in tax credit.
  • 3. The Plug-in vehicle use is primarily in the United States.
  • 4. The purchaser must retain appropriate documentation showing the purchase of the vehicle and the date of the delivery of the vehicle.

For personal use vehicles, the Plug-in vehicle tax credit is treated as a nonrefundable personal credit and is limited by the taxpayer's amount of tax liability for the year the car is placed in service. Individual purchasers and corporations who have business use of the Plug-in vehicle are subject to different tax laws that may also substantially reduce or eliminate the above benefits.

All persons considering the use of this important Federal Plug-in vehicle tax credit should consult with their own tax advisors to determine the specific amount of benefit, if any, that they may be able to claim on their federal income tax returns. Your tax advisor may also have further information on the many state and local tax incentives that may be available to Plug-in vehicle owners.

Individual tax implications may change, without notice, depending on subsequent changes in the federal tax law or further action by the Internal Revenue Service.

Please find more information at the Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov/).

How does the Plug-in charge?
The Plug-in will charge from a conventional 120V outlet in about three hours. To ensure the vehicle charges correctly, your 120V outlet should be on a dedicated 15-amp (or more) circuit. It can also be charged using 240V devices equipped with SAE J1772 connectors. A complete charge takes about 1.5 hours on 240V power. For any questions, contact our approved provider, Leviton, at (855) 5-PLUGIN, or www.leviton.com/toyota and ask for an in-home assessment.
Do I need to plug it in to use it?
No, but it is generally advantageous to plug it in. Depending on your electricity rate, you could save money by plugging the vehicle in. Maximum fuel savings will occur the more often the vehicle is charged fully (at home and at work, for example).
Would I need separate charging equipment for the Plug-in?
No. However, you will need to have a conventional 120V outlet within about 20 feet of the charge port while parked (the charge port is on the right-rear of the car). To ensure the vehicle charges properly, the vehicle should charge from a dedicated 15-amp (or more) circuit.
Why do I need a dedicated 15-amp circuit to charge?
The Prius Plug-in draws approximately 12 amps during charging. If the circuit is undersized or being used by other appliances, the vehicle may not charge. In addition, just like adding too many appliances to a circuit, this action may also trigger a circuit breaker or fuse.
Can I charge the Prius Plug-in anywhere?
The Plug-in can be charged in any 120V outlet on a dedicated 15-amp circuit.
Is there any additional equipment that I would need for a Plug-in?
The car will come with a standard 120V cordset. However, you may want to purchase an additional 120V cordset for convenience if you plan to charge away from home. You should also make sure your outlet is a dedicated 15-amp (or more) circuit. If you are unsure about your charging needs, we recommend you inquire with our approved provider, Leviton, at (855) 5-PLUGIN or www.leviton.com/toyota.
I've decided I want a 240V system installed. Who can provide this?
Contact our approved provider, Leviton, at (855) 5-PLUGIN, or www.leviton.com/toyota, and ask for an in-home assessment.
Can I drive without gasoline in the tank?
You should never drive the Plug-in without gasoline in the tank. While you may drive on electricity alone, the vehicle requires gasoline to operate properly.

What exactly is an online order for a Prius Plug-in?
When you place an online order for a Prius Plug-in, we will transmit the order to the factory to be custom built with your selection of equipment and colors and shipped to your dealer of choice. Toyota will make every effort to build vehicles on a first-come, first-serve basis.
When will I be able to place an online order? When is the Priority Order Window?
The Priority Order Window will open from approximately 9 a.m. PST, November 17, 2011 through noon PST, December 15, 2011, while supplies last. Ordering will close in each state when the state's order allocation is sold out.

When should I expect to receive my vehicle?
First deliveries of the Prius Plug-in to dealerships will begin in March 2012. Actual delivery of an online order will vary based on three factors.

First, available quantities will vary by state. In states with high demand, customers should expect longer wait times for their ordered vehicle.

Second, occasionally orders cannot be built in the month originally estimated, due to fluctuations in the supply of parts and plant capacity. Toyota will notify ordering customers of the exact production month of their vehicle when that information becomes available.

Lastly, actual delivery time will vary based on shipping schedules and geography. Generally, for West Coast dealerships, delivery will occur approximately 20-40 days after the vehicle is assembled, and approximately 30-60 days after assembly for East Coast dealerships. In certain cases, vehicles can be delivered either before or after the typical timing. Of course, we'll keep you up to date on the status of your vehicle along the way.

Who will get their vehicles first?
In general, Toyota will attempt to build vehicles on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on the time at which a customer confirms the order in the Online Order System. However, because the logistics of manufacturing a vehicle are extremely complex, we cannot guarantee that a vehicle will be built according to this schedule.
Where do I find a dealer's price for the Plug-in?
Contact your chosen dealer for pricing.
Why do I need to make a deposit?
A $500 deposit is required so we can secure your spot in the factory and build your vehicle to your configuration.
What if I submit an order on December 15?
You will still have the full 96 hours to confirm your order.
Where will the vehicle be shipped?
The vehicle will be shipped to the dealer that took your order.
What equipment is included in an online order?
The vehicle order consists of standard equipment and selected optional equipment installed on the vehicle by the factory. The vehicle order DOES NOT include any dealer-installed equipment or services offered by the dealer. Please contact your dealer to request these items for your ordered vehicle.
What price is associated with the online order?
The online order price agreed upon by dealer and customer is associated only with the standard and optional equipment ordered online, plus Delivery, Processing & Handling. The price DOES NOT include taxes, vehicle registration and other fees. The price also DOES NOT include dealer-installed equipment or services that the customer may request. Ask your dealer about the additional charges you can expect at the final transaction.
I am interested in financing options. What should I do?
Your dealer will have a variety of financing options for you to consider. You may use our payment calculator to help plan your financing.
I want to trade in another vehicle when my Plug-in arrives. What should I do?
Contact your dealer prior to placing the order and ask for an estimated trade-in value.
Can I cancel or modify my order?
Your order can be canceled at any time prior to your taking delivery of the vehicle. There is no obligation on your part. However, once the order is canceled, it cannot be reinstituted.

After an order is confirmed and submitted to the factory, it cannot be modified. If you had decided you wanted a different color or different equipment from your original order, you would have needed to cancel your first order and placed a new one before the order site closed. Be aware this new order will reset your place in line with the factory, and your estimated production time may be affected.

What happens to my deposit if I cancel my order?
When you cancel your order online, your dealer will refund your deposit. Contact your dealer to determine the method of refund.
I want to see and drive the vehicle first. What can I do?
Toyota will be hosting a series of Toyota Drive Center events in key metro areas within the launch states. Customers who have placed orders will be notified of these events and given priority to test-drive the vehicle.
What is the Plug-in personalized decal all about?
We are reaching out to a number of up-and-coming artists to design some cool custom decals for the Prius Plug-in. These limited-edition Signature Series decals will be showcased on our Prius Projects site. Purchase one while supplies last.
I have placed an order, but would like to give the vehicle to someone else. What can I do?
The vehicle must be purchased and registered in the name of the individual who placed the order, someone in their household, or their business. The order is nontransferable.
Will dealers outside of the 15 states be able to service the Prius Plug-in?
Dealers across the country will have access to the training and tools to be able to service a Prius Plug-in around the time of the first retail deliveries.
